Sat outside the sorting office for two hours. Was not waiting for anything. That is just where he sits.

what he is
The bag
Nobody has seen what is under it. Nobody has asked a second time.
It is a midsize kraft paper sack — the kind that holds two apples and a receipt. He found it the night the streetlights started humming, put it on, and it fit. That was the end of the discussion.
- 1 He does not take the bag off. This is not a mood. It is a policy.
- 2 Leave something to eat by the sorting office and he will consider it. He may not eat it while you watch.
- 3 He looks at you only when you are not looking. Check twice. By then it is usually too late.

Field notes
Four days out of the week. The rest is nobody's business.
Somebody dropped a receipt. He looked at it for a while. Then it was gone. He says nothing about this.
unclearA dog barked at him. He barked back, once, quietly, from inside the bag. The dog left first.

sightings
Say something.
He is listening through the paper.
There is a small crowd around him now. Nobody is entirely sure how it started, and the bag has no objections. Say hello in one of these two places.

In pencil, in someone else's handwriting. He has never used it. He keeps it folded where the bag meets his neck.
